Day 1 starts high up in the mountains as we commence the run at Drie Hoek Koppie, the point where the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape meet.  Our first day is predominantly on gravel as we run through what could qualify as the emptiest part of the country.  We reach the highest point of the whole route within the first few kays and then over the course of our day we will lose altitude as we wind our way through the Karoo.  We certainly expect cold mornings in this part of the world.
